Reeves-Reed Arboretum
Reeves-Reed Arboretum, Summit, NJ At first blush one wouldn’t think that formal gardens and modern sculpture would have much in common, much less be compatible within the confines of a similar context. Both can be considered as contrived, to be sure; both relying heavily on such divergent media to make their point as to make it difficult to imagine them melding into any semblance of a unified, coherent statement. Aristide Maillol and Henry Moore... [Read More...]
South Mountain Reservation
South Mountain Reservation New York City, of course, has Central Park . What about the people who live on the (New) Jersey side in very close quarters in cities like Newark, Irvington, the Oranges, Hoboken, Weehawken, Union City and the rest? Where do they go to picnic, fish, hike, or run their dogs? #gallery-2 { margin: auto; } #gallery-2 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width:... [Read More...]

Schenectady Forest Preserve
The Schenectady County Forest Preserve is located in the Town of Duanesburg on Lake Road. This is a well-marked and easy to walk trail, leading to a large beaver pond. Right after I started in, a couple came by warning me to be careful. Why, you ask? Two small bear cubs just ran in moments before me, and... [Read More...]
Thacher Park
Thacher Park Just outside Altamont, New York, lies Thacher Park, one of the richest fossil-bearing formations in the world. There’s actually two aspects of the Park: The park itself, home to miles of hiking trails, snowshoeing, a swimming pool (the opening of which is always under scrutiny with State Budget Cuts), playgrounds, ballfields, and hundreds of picnic and fireplaces. The park is open year round. Indian Ladder is seasonal. #gallery-4... [Read More...]

Sleeping Beauty Mountain
Sleeping Beauty Mountain, Fishbrook Pond, andBumps Pond Near Lake George, NY (directions at bottom) I have hiked Sleeping Beauty many times. The photos are marked “08”, but I have been back several times, and the scenery hasn’t changed much. The hike is a favorite: It can be short and sweet, or long and wonderful, ranging from two miles to 9 miles, depending on how ambitious you feel. #gallery-6 { margin: auto; } #gallery-6...
