What is an elf all about? You have to be happy all the time, of course!

“elf The Broadway Musical”, a fairly new musical based on the movie “Elf” starring Will Ferrell (2003), is a delightful and totally uplifting holiday musical running thru December 28th at Proctors. Set to spectacular scenery and wonderful song and dance, expect a great time with the kids here. I can see this play becoming a holiday tradition as much as any. Although hands down a family experience, “elf The Broadway Musical” packs powerful moral punches, as well. What has happened to Christmas? Can Santa's sleigh still fly without the spirit? Kids will love the metaphors, but the same metaphors are lessons we all need to be reminded of. This is a show to be watched by kids and their parents together. The morals of the Christmas greats are all here, but they are delivered with song and dance both you and the kids will simply adore.

The story is about Buddy (Daniel Patrick Smith), who realizes one day that he is a little different from everyone around him. He is taller, wider, and those ears are just a tad misshapen. He also just can't up with toy making as fast as the other elves. Yes, he fell into Santa's bag of toys and wound up at the North Pole. Now, he realizes he is different, and is in search of his real father back in New York, who we know will be as grumpy as grumpy can be. What follows is a whole bunch of life's lesson taught to us with magical scenery, fantastic singing and dance, and a show that fills all the gaps of older, matured Christmas classics.

The singing here was simply spectacular—as in, not a bad one in the bunch. Buddy was funny, over the top funny and jolly, and sometimes that is just what we need around the holiday season. Consider this play a fun option to A Christmas Carol and Nutcracker, with enough great scenery and song to bring in the holiday cheer to everyone.
