IrishFest2000 rolled into town this week, along with lots of cold and even more rain. Who among us thought a little weather could hold back the thousands who have made this event one of the top festivals in the United States? Indeed, walk across the fairgrounds, and you stepped in puddles and dodged umbrellas.

There was lots of rain outide

But inside was a different story!

Step inside the tents, and a different scene unfolded. Thousands packed inside to listen to some of the hottest music from Ireland ever. All our favorite were here, from the McKrells to Black 47, one of Ireland's most popular rock groups. This festival provided five-star entertainment, top of the line singers from across the ocean. This much talent under one roof is a rare gem to find, indeed.

Special accolades to The Screaming Orphans, and the duo Sephira.

The Screaming Orphans (http://www.thescreamingorphans.com/) are a group of four sisters who dazzled the audience with their own unique blend of fist-pumping, foot-stomping Irish pop music. (Their promotional materials are unfortunately tied to a Flickr account, which won't allow downloading by members of the media, and they may want to change that to a section called “Press Room”, hint-hint).

Sephira, another sister team (http://sephira.ie), lit the audience on fire with a unique blend of music and violin we did not want to stop.  They were mesmerizing in performance, unique in skill and talent (and yes, they have a press room).

On the Contemporary Stage -- Emish, the Screaming Orphans, Black 47, Shilelagh Law, Scythian and the Red Hot Chilli Pipers.

  • On the Traditional Stage -- The McKrells, Jameson’s Revenge, Sephira, The Makem & Spain Brothers, Solas and Get Up Jack, with six performers including the founders of Hair of the Dog.

  • On the Patricia McSweeney Memorial Stage -- Shadowland, Rakish Paddy, Frank Jaklitsch, Three Irish Voices with Jaklitsch, Who’s Your Paddy, The Brothers Flynn, and Kilrush.

On Saturday, those attending also enjoy the Schenectady Pipe Band playing throughout the fairgrounds.

  • On the Dance Stage -- the Michael Farrell, Boland, Iona and An Clar schools of Irish dance perform.

For the kids, magician Jim Snack returns. Plus there are pony rides, Celtic Critters petting zoo and amusement rides and games. The festival also features more than 100 food and craft vendors.

Make no mistake: The line up at this festival was second to none.

It was a strong and rowdy crowd. One face was missing, an extraordinary talent from Ireland that needs to find her way to America: Laoise Nolan [http://vimeo.com/84238607]

The not-for-profit Irish Music and Arts Festival, Inc. organizes the annual festival. The goal of the organization is, “To preserve, protect and promote Irish history and culture in the

21st century.”

In addition to producing the festival, Irish 2000 also supports other non-profit organizations. This 2014 beneficiaries are the Schenectady Ancient Order of Hibernians and the Albany Ancient Order of Hibernians. Since its inception, the festival has donated more than $350,000 to a variety of charities. Past recipients include the Wounded Warrior Project, the Double H Ranch and the Irish American Heritage Museum.
